The traffic signal at the T-intersection of Mariposa and Yates roads is expected to be operational by the end of Wednesday, city spokeswoman Sue Jones told the Daily Press. In October, City Manager Keith Metzler told the City Council that certain thresholds must be met before making modifications to public roadways, such as the installation of traffic signals and stop signs, or the imprinting of street legends. He said on numerous occasions over the years, the Mariposa Road intersection issue has been brought to the city’s attention. Eventually, Victorville officials initiated a traffic study and survey. After the analysis and study were completed, the city determined that a new signal was warranted at Yates and Mariposa roads, Metzler said. Several commuters claim the intersection is congested and unsafe, with a stop sign at Yates Road, narrow lanes in all directions and a no-stop merging lane onto northbound Mariposa Road. Victorville resident Harold Swanson told the Daily Press the “unusual configuration” of the intersection, and the narrow left-hand turn lane onto southbound Mariposa Road “is an accident waiting to happen.”  “I use that intersection every day, and every day I see a close call,” Swanson, 62, said. “The speed limit along Mariposa is 50 mph, but a lot of drivers speed since there’s no stop sign on Mariposa Road from the Green Tree Inn to Nisqualli Road.” Swanson also said because the intersection is not at a right angle, “cars almost have to make a U-turn” when turning left onto Yates Road from Mariposa Road.   The total construction cost for the traffic signal is $418,549. The contract was approved by the City Council on Oct. 6, 2020, Jones said. A notice to proceed was given to the contractor to start work on Dec. 1; however, long lead times on the purchase of the poles delayed installation which resumed July 12, Jones said.    The project was funded through the city’s current fiscal year budget, specifically the city’s street light assessment district fund and through Measure I, the half-cent sales tax collected throughout San Bernardino County for transportation improvements.
